Context and justification

The project focuses specially on development of bioethical training in Portuguese speaking countries (apart from Portugal, Republic of Angola, Republic of Cabo Verde, Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Republic of Mozambique, Democratic Republic of S. Tomé e Príncipe, Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste). A large community of Portuguese speaking bioethicists can only gain from a cooperative effort to identity particular points of interest, approaches and challenges in their respective countries and to foster collaboration between them in the capacity-building effort directed to students coming from Portuguese speaking countries.

This project can be sub-divided in two main objectives: (1) bioethics training program (BTP); (2) strengthening and launching of ethics committees within African Portuguese speaking countries by both ethics committees training program and ethics committees’ project.
A very strong item is the formation of members of ethics committees in Africa, through formal training in general Bioethics and in the ethics of human experimentation and clinical trials. On the other hand, the second aim of this project is to perform a research training, with both formation, through a postgraduation course, and oriented research. It is expected that students will be able to research in this matters and produce papers of quality, at the end of their training period. This would be an absolute innovation and in our opinion of utmost value in international bioethics panorama.
